Setting up the baby's room is a process that combines love, care, and, in my case, technical knowledge. I've already talked a bit about my choices as an architect mom when it comes to selecting the crib, dresser, and lighting for my daughter's room but today, I want to talk about the advantages of solid wood furniture.

Bringing Nature Indoors

Have you ever thought about why we feel more comfortable in outdoor spaces with sunlight and contact with nature? This is due to the innate human inclination to be connected with the environment.

This relationship has been named biophilia, which can be translated as "love of nature." For some years now, this concept has been trending in architecture and interior design. This isn't surprising since several studies have linked well-being in built spaces to features that evoke nature (colors, textures, sounds, lighting, etc.). For example, a space with yellow lighting (closest to the color of sunlight at the beginning and end of the day) is cozier than a space with white light (which makes us more alert as it is an artificial color).

With wood, we can highlight the grain patterns that have a unique beauty. These naturally created patterns can be intentionally used in furniture, creating a distinctive and elegant aesthetic.

Furthermore, the velvety texture of the wooden surface is much more pleasant to touch than a plastic surface, for example.

Furniture That Lasts Through Generations

One of the main characteristics of solid wood is its durability: when choosing wooden furniture, we are sure it was made with materials and processes designed to withstand time—just like in nature, where we see century-old trees enduring the years.

These products are sustainable because their raw material comes from planted forests (reforestation), where there is rigorous care with the production cycle—from the creation and planting of seedlings to the processing of wood after cutting: everything is done efficiently to generate minimal waste and be as ecological as possible.

All this care represents respect for the raw material, the communities that live off the economic activities it generates, and the customer who buys a legally sourced product.

In addition to contributing to a more ecological world, quality solid wood ensures long life: these pieces of furniture are passed down through siblings in the same family, friends, and even generations.

Speaking of lasting through generations, wood-toned furniture is more versatile than MDF or painted furniture because it is timeless and gender-neutral: it can be used for boys and girls alike—unlike a pink or blue crib, for example.

This is quite an interesting feature since you can have more children and continue to use the same crib, regardless of their gender. From the first to the second child, but also from one corner of the house to another: wooden furniture can be used in various settings beyond the baby's room: in the master bedroom, hallway, or living room, a wooden dresser or side table is always a smart choice.

Oh, and another incredible characteristic of wooden furniture is that it can have different shades, from lighter tones—for a lighter and softer aesthetic—to darker, more character-filled tones.

Here, I always suggest working with contrast in your baby's room or your home's general settings: if the base is neutral (walls), using the standout piece—like the crib—in a walnut tone, for example, brings contrast to the environment. The opposite is also true: if the base has more color or is darker, a lighter wood tone, like natural, will stand out.

Safety Is Essential

Furniture for children's rooms is tested in every way: curious hands, feet that love to climb, and sharp little teeth are attributes of the main users: babies!

Who doesn't know a baby who used the crib as a teether? Discovering the world through the senses is normal for little ones, and that's why ensuring the safety of these items is crucial! Besides CSPS certification regarding the safety of cribs, solid wood furniture is free of chemical components—unlike MDF or plywood used in furniture production, which have low formaldehyde emissions.

In addition to all the advantages I listed, I believe the natural beauty of wood brings feelings of coziness and tranquility, essential to a space that needs, in so many moments, to welcome parents and children.
