"As parents, designing the nursery room is one of the most exciting things we get to do to welcome our new baby. It could be the nesting instinct to feel prepared for the new life we are bringing into the world or the fact that we had already decorated a nursery for our baby girl two years ago and now we are doing it for our baby boy. However, something about this nursery felt extra special.

A nursery is not just a place for the baby to sleep but also a space where countless memories will be made. From late-night feeds to rocking them to sleep, bedtime stories, endless lullabies, and playtime. In this blog post, I want to go through some decor tips and ideas for designing a nursery that will make the room functional, beautiful, and welcoming.

1. CHOOSE A THEME

One way to make the nursery feel cohesive and put together is to choose a theme. Whether it’s a favorite children’s book, a favorite animal, or a particular color scheme, a theme can guide your choices for everything from paint colors to bedding to wall art. Remember that the theme doesn’t have to be too specific or literal; you can choose something more abstract, like “adventure” or “nature,” and incorporate different elements that fit within that theme. For Graham’s nursery, we went with a travel theme.

2. DECIDE ON A PAINT COLOR

This decision can be completely based on your theme or just preference. Don’t feel like you have to do something bold. Sometimes a neutral base is the best place to start. You can always add color through other décor in the nursery.

In Graham’s nursery, we decided to go bold by painting all the walls, doors, and trim Vineland Green by Benjamin Moore. I was going for a bold and moody look, and I absolutely love how it turned out. However, if bold isn’t your thing, but you still want to do something different, consider adding an accent wall behind the crib or wallpapering a wall.

3. INVEST IN QUALITY FURNITURE

Investing in quality furniture is vital to creating a functional nursery. Look for pieces that can grow with your child, such as a convertible crib that can transform into a toddler bed or a dresser that can double as a changing table.

4. PLAY WITH TEXTURES

Adding different textures to the nursery can make it feel cozy and inviting. Mix and match other fabrics like knits, linens, a rug, and cotton for bedding and throw pillows. You can also add texture to the walls with wallpaper, a fun mural, or even a tapestry.

5. PERSONALIZE YOUR SPACE

Adding personal touches to the nursery can make it feel more welcoming. Personalize bedding, blankets, and stuffed animals, or add a name sign.

6. DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE STORAGE

Storage is key with all the baby gear that comes with a new arrival. Incorporate plenty of storage solutions into the nursery to keep things organized and tidy. Consider options like bookshelves, baskets, and cubbies that can easily be accessed.
